4 common dental myths you may have heard and why they are wrong!

We have all heard the myth that tooth loss is genetics, that we will all loose our teeth eventually. This is entirely wrong as tooth loss can be preventable from good oral hygiene habits.

The myth that only sweets can cause cavities. This is untrue as cavities can be caused by many starchy and sticky foods like fries, bread and bananas. Therefore, it is essential to continuesly brush and floss our teeth daily even if we don’t consume sweets.

The myth that harsh and strong brushing with a hard bristle toothbrush can clean your teeth more. This is false and harmful for your teeth. The protective coating on your teeth, known as enamel is the strongest bone in the body, however, small pieces can still be taken off if constant pressure is applied. It is important to use a gentle yet effective method of brushing as well as use a soft bristle toothbrush to not harm the enamel on your teeth.

The most popular myth we have all heard is that our oral health does not impact the rest of our body. This is incorrect as our mouth is a major entery into our body and many other imprtant systems in the body such as the digestive system. Did you know severe infections in the mouth can also cause serious issues in the heart, though this is uncommon.
