The effects of oral piercings 

Oral piercings may look nice, but the effect it has on your oral health could have long-lasting effects. Problems may not arise immiedetly, but pain, swelling, infection and gum recession are common complications associated with oral piercings. 

What are oral piercings? 

An oral (mouth) piercings is a small hole in your tongue, lip or cheek, where a jewerly is attached. There are various types of oral piercings like tongue piercings, frenum piercings, and uvula piercings. 

What are some of the effects of oral piercings?

Short term complications: 

  • Infection (if oral hygiene procedures are not followed properly) 
  • Swelling of the tongue 
  • Slight bleeding 
  • Pain

Long term complications:

  • Fractured tooth
  • Trauma to gums or cheek. Gum Recession 
  • Oral piercings may interfere with chewing, speaking and swallowing 

How to lower the risks? 

To lower the risk of oral piercing complications, its important to make sure your piercing heals well without getting an infectoin, and that your cleaning your piercing daily.

Hygiene tips: 

  • Rinse your oral piercing after every meal and before bad. To clean, use an alcohol free mouthwash or plain water.
  • Brush 2x a day, floss daily 
  • Take our your piercings during physical activity to help prevent accidental injuries 
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods 
  • Avoid playing with the jewerly. Moving the piercing constantly can irritate the surroundings tissue, causing damage to your teeth and gums
