Over the last 10 years, about 26 thousand refugees have arrived in Canada annually. Fortunately, refugees in Canada are eligible to receive dental care through the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). Understanding the IFHP is essential for receiving accessible dental care and maintaining good oral health.
What is the Interim Federal Health program (IFHP)?
The IFHP offers temporary dental coverage for refugees in Canada who don’t have other dental insurance. This program allows for access to various dental procedures like exams, cleanings, and emergency dental care. The IFHP ensures that refugees have access to basic dental care, but its important to know which services are provided.
What services are provided?
- Preventitive treatment: eg. Routine cleanings, exams
- Restorative: eg. Fillings
- Emergency dental care: eg. Extractions and immediate treatment
Orthodontic treatments are typically not covered, however once refugees become eligible provincial insurance programs, orthodontic treatment may be available.
