Dry socket is a painful condition after wisdom tooth surgery where the blood clot that protects the exposed bone and nerves is dislodged or dissolves too early, leaving the area vulnerable and delaying healing. Dry socket happens within the first few days after the wisdom tooth surgery has happend due to failure of the blood clot to form. If you notice any symptoms of dry socket immediatly contact your scarborough dentist to make sure they can evaluate and treat it.
Symptoms of dry socket:
– increased or severe pain that doesn’t improve with pain medication.
-pain that may radiate to your ear
-visible bone or a “dry looking” socket
How to prevent dry socket:
–follow post-operative instructions
– avoid drinking through straws as the suction can dislodge the blood clot
-Avoid nicotine since it can restrict blood flow and cause dislodgement
-Avoid hard foods and try to eat softer foods like yogurt or smoothies
-Make sure to stay hydrated to aid in healing
