What to Expect During a Dental Exam

Posted .

During dental exams with your family dentists, a hygienist will likely clean your teeth by scaling plaque and tartar, and polishing them. Your dentist will then perform a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth for cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. They will also check your bite, take X-rays to identify hidden issues, and discuss oral health concerns you have.

Cleaning:

  • A dental hygienist will clean your teeth, which may involve removing plaque and tartar buildup with manual or ultrasonic tools.
  • They will then polish your teeth to smooth the surface and remove stains, making it harder for plaque to stick.
  • A professional flossing of your teeth is also standard.

Examination:

  • The dentist will carefully examine your teeth, gums, and mouth for signs of decay, gum disease, and other problems. They will also check your neck and jaw for any lumps or abnormalities.
  • Dental X-rays may be taken to reveal issues not visible to the naked eye, such as cavities, impacted teeth, or bone loss.
  • The dentist will assess how your teeth fit together to identify any alignment issues.

Discussion and follow-up:

  • You and the doctor will discuss your medical history, new medications, and any changes you’ve noticed in your oral health, such as bleeding gums or sensitivity.
  • The dentist will discuss their findings with you and create a personalized treatment plan if any issues are found.
