What to eat and what to avoid eating after wisdom tooth surgery
After wisdom tooth surgery, eat soft, nutrient-rich foods like smoothies, yogurt, and mashed potatoes, and avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods, as well as using a straw. Stick to a soft food diet for the first few days to avoid irritating the extraction site, dislodging blood clots, and causing complications like a painful dry socket. Gradually reintroduce more solid foods as healing progresses.
What to eat:
First 24 hours: Focus on liquids and very soft foods. Cold items like icecream or jell-O can help with swelling.
- Smoothies (Without a straw)
- Yogurt, pudding, and applesauce
- Blended soups and broths
- Ice cream, custard
Next few days: Gradually add soft solids that don’t require much chewing.
- Scrambled eggs or oatmeal
- Mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes
- Soft cheeses
- Soft fish like salmon
- Finely minced chicken or fish in a sauce
- Cottage cheese
What to avoid:
Foods that require chewing:
- Crunchy foods like chips, nuts, cookies, and hard candies
- Chewy foods like tough meats, bread crusts, and sticky candies
Irritating foods:
- Spicy foods, which can cause pain and inflammation
- Acidic foods
- Foods with small seeds or grains, such as berries, and seedy bread, as they can get stuck in the extraction site.
