Do you know that “The Canadian Dental Association: recommends infants to visit
the dentist, within the 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth or by one year age.
The reason is to prevent any problem with his or her teeth.
Why Age One?
- Early Detection: Even baby (primary) teeth can develop cavities. Identifying
problems early makes treatment less invasive. - Parental Guidance: Dentists can provide tailored advice on brushing
techniques, teething relief, and diet right from the start. - Growth Monitoring: A child’s mouth and jaw develop rapidly in the first few
years. Regular visits help track progress, ensuring teeth erupt correctly.
Dental hygiene for babies and toddlers:
In between regular dental visits, daily oral hygiene should be part of your baby’s
routine. That includes habits like:
- Wiping baby’s gums with a soft cloth before they even have teeth.
- Brushing baby’s teeth (or tooth, as the case may be) twice a day.
- Using floss daily once your baby has two teeth that touch.
- Discouraging thumb sucking.
- Avoiding bottle feeding in bed.
- Weaning from a pacifier around their first birthday.
- Switching from a bottle to a cup when baby is about 18 months old.
- Limiting sugar in your child’s diet.
