A new federal government initiative called the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) aims to help Canadians with no access to dental care by offering financial support for dental services. It lowers financial barriers and helps pay for dental care.
Some services are:
- Preventive services, including cleaning, polishing and fluoride.
- Diagnostic services, including examinations and X-rays.
- Restorative services, including fillings.
- Endodontic services, including root canal treatments.
CDCP oral health providers are:
- Dentists
- Denturists
- Dental hygienists
- Dental specialists
The CDCP coverage relies on adjusted net income. The thresholds for coverage access are:
- Full coverage: Those with adjusted net income less than $70,000. They’ll have a co-payment of 0%.
- 60% coverage: Those with adjusted net income between $70,000 and $80,000. They’ll have a co-payment of 40%.
- 40% coverage: Those with adjusted net income between $80,000 and $90,000. They’ll have a co-payment of 60%.

A few things to keep in mind:

To qualify for the CDCP, the following criteria must be met:
- Have filed their tax return in the previous year.
- An adjusted family net income of less than $90,000.
- No access to private dental insurance.
- Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.
Tips to Prepare for Application:
- File your taxes to ensure you are eligible for the program.
- Make sure your mailing address is up to date with both the Canada Revenue Agency and Service Canada.
- Do not expect reimbursement for any dental work you receive before your application has been approved, which is likely not until May 2024 for people 85 and over.
