How to Avoid Gingivitis
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease causing irritation, swelling and redness of the gum. Gingivitis is often due to a buildup of bacteria and plaque, a sticky layer of food debris and bacteria. This triggers an inflammatory response causing the gums to be swollen and tender. Gingivitis does not cause bone loss, but if left untreated can develop into a more severe gum disease called periodontitis, which impacts jaw bone level and other supporting structures.
Symptoms of Gingivitis?
- Bleeding gums (when brushing or flossing)
- Red gums
- Gums that are tender when touched
- Swollen gums
- Shiny appearance to gums

- Brush for 2 minutes
- Floss daily to remove bacteria between your teeth. Use a floss threader or floss pick for orthodontic areas
