Signs Your Dental Crown May Need Replacement

Posted .

Signs that a dental crown may need replacement include pain or sensitivity, visible cracks or wear, looseness, and discoloration or a bad taste around the crown. Other indicators are gum recession, swelling or irritation around the crown, and difficulty chewing.

Common signs to watch for:

Pain or sensitivity: You may feel discomfort when biting or eating hot/cold foods, which could signal that the crown is loose or the tooth underneath is decaying.

Visible damage. Chips, cracks, or worn-down areas are clear signs that the crown is no longer intact and may need replacement.

Looseness:  If the crown feels loose or moves when you bite, it needs to be replaced to prevent further damage to the underlying tooth.

Discoloration: A dark line at the gum line or discoloration around the crown can indicate the seal is broken, allowing bacteria to enter and cause decay.

Gum problems: swollen, tender, or irritated gums around the crown, or receding gums that expose the crown’s edge, are warning signs.

Bad taste or odor: A persistent bad taste or bad breath from the area can mean there is decay or infection under the crown.

Difficulty chewing: If you experience discomfort while chewing, it may indicate an issue with the crown’s fit or stability.

Even without obvious symptoms, it is recommended to have your dentist check your crown during your regular check-ups, as they can last 10-15 years on average. If you notice any of these signs, schedule an appointment with your dentist to have it evaluated.
