Some Important Things To Know About Root Canals

Posted .

Here’s some information about root canals that can help you better understand this procedure. Here at The Smile Team in Scarborough, Toronto, we perform many root canals each month. Feel free to call Scarborough’s top clinic when you are in pain to evaluate if a root canal is needed.

Why do I need a root canal?

Root canals are needed when:

1- The nerve is inflamed and patients are in severe pain

2- The nerve is necrotic and patients have an infected tooth

In either case, the nerve is involved and a simple filling is out of the question. Treating the nerve can only be done by either removal of the tooth (extraction) or saving it by performing a root canal. In a lot of cases, removing a tooth is not a good option especially if the tooth is salvageable and we want to keep it for various reasons such as aesthetics or function.

What should you expect during a root canal?

You will get anesthesia to numb that area followed by the dentist removing the nerve and cleaning out any infection. Dr. Abid Hidayat will then either finish the root canal in the same appointment or leave a special dressing and bring the patient back to finish the root canal. After the first appointment, your pain will dramatically decrease and soon you will be in no discomfort.

What can you expect after your root canal?

Most people need antibiotics before/after the procedure and at times some anti-inflammatory medications to help with any discomfort. It’s advisable to eat softer foods until you get a permanent filling or a crown on that tooth.
