Tooth Sensitivity and What To Do?

Posted .

Dr. Abid Hidayat: Many patients come to the office asking me how they can improve the sensitivity of their teeth. They tell me that they have to modify their diet because drinking cold drinks and eating acidic foods causes them discomfort. To combat this, they have to make changes by avoiding eating and drinking cold foods along with making changes to their lifestyle.

If you are one of these patients, just know that there are some really good options and you do not have to live with tooth sensitivity.

-Step 1- The first thing is to get an assessment at our office. I’ll figure out if the sensitivity is coming from cavities, bone loss, gum recession, fractured teeth, missing restorations, etc.

-Step 2- Once we figure out that the sensitivity is coming from recession or root exposure, we have three options. Option number one is restoring it with a bonding option, number two is using toothpaste like Sensodyne, and option number three (which in most cases is the best option) is getting a soft tissue grafting.

Connective tissue grafts have to be a consideration and a periodontal assessment is very important to figure out if you have keratinized tissue, whether you are a good candidate for grafting and if the procedure will be successful.
