What Is a Composite Filling?

A composite filling, also known as a “white filling,” is a tooth-coloured mixture of plastic and glass to fill cavities or repair chipped or cracked teeth. They are a popular alternative at Scarborough dentists  to traditional silver amalgam fillings because they blend in with the natural colour of your teeth. They are applied in layers, hardened with a special light, and shaped to look and feel natural.

When doing this procedure, your family dentists will first remove the decayed portion of the tooth. Next they will apply a conding material inside the hole. Then the composite resin is placed into the tooth in thin layers. After that, a special light is used to harden each layer. Finally, once the final layer hardens, your dentist will shape and polish the filling to match the rest of your teeth.

Advantages:

They match the colour of your teeth, making them nearly invisible.

The material is slightly flexible, which can mean less drilling is required.

They can be used for chipped or cracked teeth as well as cavities.

Disadvantages:

They are less durable than metal fillings and won’t last as long as them, especially on chewing surfaces of back teeth where chewing pressure is very high.

There may be a higher risk of decay forming under the filling compared to some other types of fillings.
