What is erosion, causes and prevention?

Dentinal erosion occurs due to the mouths enviroment becoming too acidic. This could be due to many
factors such as diet, pregnancy, eating disorders, GERD and etc.
Acidic foods and bevrages such as soda or lemons can cause our mouth to temporarily become acidic
for 20 minutes to an hour.
Constant vomiting from pregancy exposes the mouth to the acidic contents of our stomach. Certain
acidic cravings could also be the cause.
Contant vomiting from eating disorders have a similar effect. Binge eating sweets could also make the
individual more susceptable to cavities.
This acidic enviroment makes the enamel slighty softer and more susceptible to be worn away. It is
important to NOT brush for teeth for atleast 30 minutes as brushing right after can wear off small peices
of softened enamel. It reduce the acidic effcet do not swish acidic beverages in your mouth.
It is important to have regular visits to the dentist to detect this erosion and make changes in ones diet or
habits to prevent further damage.
