If you’ve chipped a tooth, immediately book an emergency appointment with your family dentist. While
waiting, rinse your mouth with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and pain, and save
the broken fragment if possible. To protect yourself , cover sharp edges with dental wax and eat soft
foods to avoid further damage. Once you get to the dentist they will choose a treatment for your chipped
tooth based on the severity of the damage, which can include smoothing small chips, bonding with a
tooth-colored resin for minor chips, applying a veneer for front teeth, or placing a crown for a larger break
that has affected the cusp. For very severe damage that might involve the tooth’s inner pulp, a root canal
may be necessary before the tooth is repaired with a crown. In rare cases, if the tooth is too severely
broken to be saved, extraction could end up as the only option.
