What to expect during a tooth extraction

Posted .

During a tooth extraction, you will first receive local anesthesia, and potentially sedation, to numb the area. The dentist will then loosen the tooth with an elevator and remove it, sometimes in pieces if it’s impacted or broken. Afterward, gauze will be placed to control bleeding, and you may need stitches. You should then follow post-procedure instructions for pain and swelling management.

During the procedure:

  • Anesthesia: The area around the tooth will be numbed with a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel pain, though you may feel pressure. For anxious patients or more complex extractions, a sedative or general anesthesia may be used.
  • Tooth removal: The dentist will use instruments to loosen the tooth and then pull it out. For impacted teeth, the gum tissue and sometimes bone may need to be cut to access the tooth.
  • Tooth in pieces: If the tooth is difficult to remove whole, it may be broken into smaller pieces.
  • Cleaning and stitching: After the tooth is removed, the socket will be cleaned. Stitches may be used to close the gum edges, but they are not always necessary and may be dissolvable.

After the procedure:

  • Gauze: You will be given a piece of gauze to bite down on to help stop the bleeding and form a blood clot.
  • Follow instructions: You will receive specific instructions for aftercare, which are crucial for proper healing. Be careful not to bite your tongue, cheek, or lip while the area is still numb.
