Your Child’s First Dental Visit

A child’s first dental visit should be by age one or within six months of their first tooth, focusing on monitoring growth, checking for decay, and teaching parents proper care, with the dentist examining teeth, gums, and overall oral development to prevent early problems and buila positive oral development to prevent early problems and build a positive relationship with dental care. Prepare by scheduling at a good time, staying calm, and bringing comfort items to ease the child into the new experience.

When to go

– By Age One: The Canadian Dental Association recommends a visit within six months of the first tooth erupting or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.

Why Early Visits Matter

– Catch Problems Early: Allows dentists to spot and fix small issues before they become big problems, like tooth decay or alignment issues.

– Parent Education: Dentists provide crucial advice on cleaning, fluoride, and potential future needs like sealants.

Build Trust: Familiarizes your child with the dentist and dental setting, reducing fear.

What to expect at the visit

– Check-up: The dentist will examine teeth, gums, palate, and jaw, often using small mirror and a knee-to-knee position wtih the parent.

– Cleaning: A hygienist might gently count and clean the teeth.

– X-rays: May be taken to check between teeth or see adult teeth coming in.

Fluoride/sealants: Discussed as needed, sealants might be suggested for molars later on.
